My Art: Then and Now

Every once in a while, it’s good to look back to see how far you’ve come. How you’ve grown and changed as an artist. To see and be proud of your diligence and hard work. Walk the journey with me of then and now art below. 😊

THEN

I drew this in 2001. (Note my maiden name.) It was likely from a drawing book as that’s what I had access to. It is probably an exact copy of what was in the book. I began with a pencil drawing, added ink using a micron pen and then likely cheap colored pencil over the top.

NOW

I painted this sweet baby portrait in 2020. It’s my youngest son. I started out with a light pencil sketch and then began painting in watercolor. At the time, I believe I was using Arteza watercolors pans. They no longer offer the same set.

THEN

I drew this in 2010. I probably used some sort of reference photo for the lighthouse and created my own landscape. I began with a pencil drawing, add ink and then likely cheap colored pencil over the top.

NOW

I painted this lighthouse in 2021 from a photograph I took while visiting the East Point Lighthouse. I started out with a light pencil sketch and then began painting in watercolor using Winsor Newton Professional watercolor pans.

THEN

I drew this in 2018. This was when I really began my watercolor journey. I used a lot of colored pencil, graphite and ink up until this point. I began with a pencil drawing, added ink using a micron pen and then likely some cheap watercolor set over the top.

NOW

I don’t really paint churches so this was the only one I could find. It was painted in 2023 for some type of art challenge. I doubt I even did a pencil sketch as it’s a pretty basic layout. I used Winsor Newton Professional watercolor pans.

THEN

I drew this in 2001. (Note my maiden name.) Again, it was likely from a drawing book, and it is probably an exact copy of what was in the book. I began with a pencil drawing, added ink using a micron pen.

NOW

I have painted a few horses since. This is my latest from 2023. I absolutely love painting white on white so this was a joy to paint. I did a pencil sketch and used Winsor Newton Professional watercolor pans.

THEN

I drew this in 2007. (Note my maiden name.) Again, it was likely an exact copy from some type of art book. I began with a pencil drawing and used cheap colored pencils.

NOW

I don’t really paint many fish and this was also when I first started using the acrylic medium as watercolor had quickly become my primary medium. Painted in 2023. I really didn’t have high expectations for this one but was excited and pleased with how it turned out! Betta fish are so pretty too. I began with a pencil sketch and used a combination of brands but mostly Liquitex.

THEN

This one from 2004 is almost embarrassing but it really shows how far I’ve come. (Note my maiden name.) This was a simple drawing of a bear that was sitting on the stand in my living room. I began with a pencil drawing, added a micron pen and used cheap colored pencils.

NOW

I have no other bears except for this red panda (is it even a bear?). This acrylic was painted in 2024 for an art challenge with my son. Again, no real high hopes but I gave it my all and certainly a huge improvement from the first one! 😁 I began with a pencil sketch and used a combination of brands but mostly Liquitex.

THEN

This one was from 2007. (Note my maiden name.) This was one of my most detailed colored pencil drawings at that time. I loved birds even then and was so proud of it. It hangs on the wall at my mom’s house. I began with a pencil drawing and used cheap colored pencils.

NOW

I have so many bird paintings! It was hard to choose just one. So, you get multiple! 😁 This sweet guy was painted in 2023 using Winsor Newton Professional watercolor pans. The textured background was achieved by sprinkling salt in wet paint.

NOW

This red cardinal was painted in 2025 on a wrapped canvas using Liquitex acrylic paints.

NOW

This tender painting was done in 2025 using Winsor Newton Professional watercolor pans. The textured background was achieved by sprinkling salt in wet paint.

THEN

Although I didn’t date this drawing, I began playing guitar in 2008. So, it was likely around that time. (Also note my maiden name.) I began with a pencil sketch and used cheap colored pencils.

NOW

Because I worked so much with colored pencil in the beginning years, I want to share a few extras of these as well as I recently returned to colored pencil after taking a break for almost 20 years. This sweet girl was drawn using Kalour colored pencils in 2024.

NOW

This beautiful pink carnation was done in 2023. I’m not sure which pencils I used for this one.

NOW

This vibrant Greenfinch was done in 2024. I believe I used Kalour colored pencils for this one.

NOW

This beautiful pink and yellow rose was also done in 2024. I used Kalour colored pencils for this one.

Thank you so much for taking the art journey through the years with me! 😊 Not all of these artworks are available in my shop yet so if there is one that you are interested in please reach out to me!
